Scary Movie Franchise: Laugh Yourself Silly

I’m not much of a fan of horror movies. Why? Am I scared of haunted houses and ghosts? Quite the opposite, actually. I feel like most Hollywood horror movies have a similar plot involving scary places, spooky music, cloudy skies, lightning, ugly ghosts, hot female characters, and so on. Jump scare scenes are quite predictable and cliché these days. If you also feel the same way about horror movies, I have just the thing for you – the ‘Scary Movie’ franchise.

Yep, they named the movies after Scary Movies for obvious reasons. The objective of these movies is to make fun of American classic horror films. There are 5 movies in the franchise. Each of these movies is a spoofy version of some horrors. For example, the first movie of this series was the parody version of I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997). The movie’s opening scene is a clear parody of a particular scene from the movie Scream (1996). The same goes for its sequels as well. So, if you want the comedy to hit at the maximum level, you will need to watch the originals such as The Exorcist (1973), The Haunting (1999), The Ring (2002), Saw (2004), The Grudge (2004), War of the Worlds (2005), Black Swan (2010), etc. But don’t worry even if you haven’t seen any of these movies; you will still find Scary Movies funny.

You probably understand that these movies are not the best comedies in terms of quality and originality since they are just spoofy versions. You may find their comic pattern unrelatable or cringe-worthy since they are targeted at a specific category of audience. All the absurd jokes may seem repetitive and annoying at some point when you watch these movies one after another.

Then again, I enjoyed the franchise since I am a fan of this type of comedy (don’t judge me for that). Anna Faris as Cindy was hilarious. She was in the first four movies of the series. I guess her absence made a negative impact on the last movie that came out in 2013. The audience really hated the film.

In conclusion, I’d recommend you to watch the first one from 2000. You’ll feel the click if the franchise is right for you. And decide whether the whole franchise is worth watching or not.
